Scenic Roads for a Welsh Road Trip

Two Scenic Roads for a Welsh Road Trip: The A470 and A483

If you’re planning a road trip in Wales, I’d highly recommend two scenic routes: the A470 and the A483. We’ve driven both, and the experience was wonderful. The roads offer sweeping, open views, with relatively light traffic, making it easy to enjoy the rolling Welsh hills, lush green pastures dotted with cows and sheep, and a variety of birds soaring overhead.

The A483, running from north to south, takes you through several classic Welsh towns, including Wrexham, Welshpool and Builth Wells, before reaching the coastal city of Swansea. In the northern section, the road crosses back and forth over the English border several times, making for a rather unusual and fun driving experience!

The A470, on the other hand, runs from south to north. Starting in Cardiff, the capital of Wales, it takes you through Bannau Brycheiniog National Park (the Brecon Beacons), past the beautiful Elan Valley in Mid Wales, and onward to Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) in North Wales. If you’re a fan of dramatic landscapes and breathtaking scenery, this is a route you won’t want to miss.

The two roads can easily be connected via the A44 in Mid Wales, making it convenient to combine them into a longer road trip. While you’re in the area, it’s also worth visiting a red kite feeding centre to see these magnificent birds of prey up close.

Wishing everyone a wonderful road trip in Wales!
