Near the mid-Wales town of Rhayader is a Red Kite Feeding Station; we bought tickets for this trip.
Around 1900 red kites nearly vanished — only three pairs left — after hunting and egg collecting. After more than a century of conservation there are over two hundred birds, all descended from one pair. We learned this at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales the day before; it is extraordinary.
Wales has several feeding farms where bird lovers can watch red kites up close — a moving conservation story.
