Venice

Working while travelling, a week disappeared quickly — including a trip to Venice that taught me so much.

Every street is for pedestrians; there are no cars. Besides the walkways there are canals: family boats, tourist gondolas, water taxis, ambulances, police boats, rubbish boats. Everyone steers with impressive skill.

Gondolas are longer than they look. One day an ambulance appeared and gondoliers edged aside in the narrow channel with calm precision so it could pass — I almost applauded.
