In Venice I visited Museo Fortuny, drawn first by the architecture and how the spaces were planned. The museum was once the home of artist Mariano Fortuny, with his painting studio, textile workshop, and collections of paintings, fabrics, and sculpture.
On the ground floor, the Winter Garden is lined with murals that called to mind the artist’s final masterpiece in Maugham’s The Moon and Sixpence — a quiet, heartfelt moment.
At the end of the route came an unexpected surprise: a cloister of delicate craftsmanship and careful lighting. When I realised it was built from corrugated cardboard, I walked through again and again, looking for every detail I had missed.
Highly recommended if you are travelling to Venice — a museum with a character all its own.
